Dry Herb Portable Vape Review

Crafty Vaporizer by Storz & Bickel

The Crafty vaporizer is one of two portables by German vape manufacturer Storz & Bickel, maker of the renown Volcano vaporizer. An unassuming little vape, the Crafty appears to be kind of standard at first glance. But this is the little brother of the Mighty vaporizer, sharing the same DNA…and looks can be deceiving. So, just how does the Crafty measure up against the field of contenders in the portable vape coliseum? Continue reading this review to find out.

Smaller than the Mighty

Let’s start with the basics. Measuring in at 4.3 inches (11cm) by 2.2 inches (5.7cm) by 1.3 inches (3.3cm) and weighing 5 ounces (135g) this little vape fits comfortably in one hand and most pockets. And although the build quality is typical S&B solid, it doesn’t feel heavy. The overall shape is ergonomic and the ribbed exterior provides a solid grip while acting as a heat sink to keep the exterior cool.

Crafty Build Quality

This is Storz & Bickel, German designed, German engineered and German manufactured. Need we say more? You just know when you pick it up and adjust a component or two that this thing was not built in an Asian sweatshop. It’s small and light, and yet, when you handle it, you can tell it was built to last.

Crafty Operating Temperatures

The small size of the Crafty vaporizer does not permit incorporation of digital temperature controls like its big brother, the Mighty. The Crafty comes preset with two default temperature settings that function quite well at 356F and 383F. The lower is the standard vaping temp, while the boost is for squeezing out your final draw, or just to periodically pull through a super potent puff.

Crafty App

It seems like there’s an app for just about everything these days. So Storz & Bickel is right in there with their own Crafty App that basically functions as a digital remote control. Operating and adjusting this vape via the Crafty app is easier and more useful than one might imagine. It includes the following features:

  • Operates on Android, iOS or SmartWatch
  • Communicates via Bluetooth
  • Customize default and boost temperatures between 104F and 410F
  • View actual chamber temp in real time
  • Remotely turn on the Crafty
  • Locate a lost or misplaced Crafty
  • Control LED brightness on the Crafty
  • Extend automatic shutoff time from two minutes to five minutes

The Warm Up

Warm up time is between 90 seconds and two minutes, not the Crafty’s strongest point. But we doubt you’ll be complaining because good things are worth waiting for. The Crafty’s desktop-quality vapor is one of those good things.

Vibration signaling is a unique and useful feature of the Crafty. It allows you to slip her into your pocket while she’s warming up and receive a little shake when she’s ready to blow. This way you can discreetly tuck her away during the warm-up an enjoy a good vibe when clouds are on the horizon.

Crafty Vapor Quality

Now we’re getting down to brass tacks. (We’re not sure why that aphorism makes sense but everyone says it, so there’s that…)  Anyway, as we were saying, the Crafty produces vapor worth waiting for. To emphasize just how well the Crafty vapes, it’s on par with or better than many desktops. We realize this is an incredible claim, but that’s our position and we’re sticking to it.

For those familiar with the vapor quality of Storz & Bickel’s Volcano vaporizers, the desktop-quality claim might come as a surprise. The Volcano produces world-class vapor that is unmatched by any other machine on the market, and the Crafty is equally impressive in its own right. It’s not a Volcano or even a Mighty, but for a handheld pocket vape, this machine rests comfortably in a class of its own. Seriously, it’s that good.

Vapor Cooling Path

Key to the Crafty’s excellent vapor quality is a bit of advanced thermal engineering. At the top of the device sits the removable housing which covers the heating chamber and incorporates the swing-out mouthpiece. Engineered cleverly within is a maze of baffles through which vapor travels before reaching the mouthpiece. This well designed cooling pathway provides just the right amount of time and distance for the vapor to travel in order to mitigate harshness and perfect the taste.

Draw Resistance

One of the variables we consider when evaluating overall quality is draw resistance, i.e. how hard you have to pull when inhaling. With the Crafty there is very little resistance. You don’t feel like you’re sucking through a straw. Draws just seem to flow in a natural and relaxed manner. It’s not quite as free-flowing as its plug-in sibling, the Plenty, but nothing other than inhaling from a Volcano balloon compares to the Storz & Bickel Plenty. Having said that, it’s fairly comparable, which is saying a lot for a small portable. Considering the outstanding taste, impressive cloud density, and lack of draw resistance, the Crafty is one of the most enjoyable portable vaporizers we’ve had the pleasure of using.

Crafty Battery Life

The Crafty vaporizer is powered by a lithium-ion battery that takes about two hours to recharge when fully drained. You can run on pass-through power while charging but only if the battery has at least a twenty percent charge remaining. One nice feature is that the input recharging plug is micro USB, and it will recharge at both 1Amp and 2Amp speed, so you can easily recharge from just about any portable charger, including most car chargers.

While some portables will run for hours on a fully charged battery, the Crafty lasts about 45 minutes to an hour. This is pushing it, in our opinion, but sufficient to partake in three solid sessions, possibly four, depending on your style. For most users, this will be enough to get them through the day. For others, it might fall a bit short. But, as we said, the Crafty is super easy to recharge via its micro USB input connection.

Crafty Power Bank

The Crafty vaporizer power bank addresses our only significant concern about the Crafty vaporizer – battery life.  While the Crafty’s fully charged internal battery provides about forty-five minutes of vape time, this cuts it a bit short if you are trying to squeeze in session number four and no plug is in sight.

crafty power bank

Enter the Crafty vaporizer power bank, a tidy little accessory measuring 84 x 64 x 20 mm and weighing 160 g (or 3.31 x 2.52 x 0.78 in. and weighing 5.6 ounces) – about the size of a deck of poker cards. The Crafty power bank packs 6600 milliAmp-hours (mAh) of juice, enough to recharge the Crafty two times, effectively tripling its portable vape time to an impressive 2.25 hours. That’s ninety minutes of additional vape time on top of the Crafty’s standard forty-five minutes. Pretty impressive.

The Crafty power bank comes with overcharge and short circuit protection, utilizes a 5Volt/1Amp micro USB input and two standard USB outputs of 5V/1A and 5V/2A. It comes with a charging cord that exits the power bank using one of the two standard USB ports and enters the Crafty, or any other portable device, via a micro USB port. With the right charging cord or adapter, the Crafty power bank can act as a portable power supply to most portable rechargeable devices.

If you have an extra $25 to spare, we recommend that you pick up one of these at some point, just in case. They are especially useful at concert venues, hiking and camping trips, and other outdoor activities. You can check out the Crafty power bank at this recommended dealer.

If built-in battery life is your thing, the Firefly 2 is an option to consider. But we must say, its vapor doesn’t quite live upt to that of the Crafty. Which means you should consider the other Storz & Bickel portable, Crafty’s big brother, the Mighty vaporizer, which offers two hours of battery life and identical vapor quality, but with slightly less portability due to its size. You can check out our review of the Storz & Bickel Mighty vaporizer here.

Dry Blends and Dabs

The Crafty vaporizer is designed to work with dry blends, dabs, and oils. So regardless of your blend or boil the Crafty is capable. The unit comes with a dosing capsule and an insertable stainless steel mesh Liquid Pad for use with liquids. You can purchase a four capsule caddy that’s about the size of a keychain for less than $10 if you want to categorize your capsules by source material or simply want some spares on hand. If you’re caught out and about without your dosing capsule, but need to vape liquids, never fear. Simply sandwich a dab between layers of dry blend to produce an exquisite result.

Crafty Vaporizer Summary

All things considered, the Crafty is one of the best portable vaporizers on the market. It’s compact, produces outstanding vapor, handles virtually any feedstock, and comes with the Crafty App that allows you to tweak the settings to your preference. Historically, our only downside has been the Crafty’s price point. But prices have recently dropped well below $300 so that’s really no longer a valid negative given this product’s superior performance. The Crafty is probably the best portable vaporizer money can buy. So if you’re interested in picking one up we suggest you buy from this dealer where you will get the best price, the latest firmware, and the manufacturer’s two-year warranty,
